The sensible place to start was the lost and found box at reception, but when Dan asked if they had a set of Vauxhall car keys he was met with shaken heads.

Harry began to walk towards the stairs but Dan pulled him across to the lift.

‘I always take the stairs,’ Harry said.

‘Maybe you do,’ Dan said, ‘but the lad I spoke to said he saw Keith in the lift, so let’s try and retrace his steps.’ They stepped out onto the second floor and looked around.

Harry frowned. ‘There’s a lot of ground to cover. Where do we start?’ he asked.

‘The politics section seems the obvious choice,’ Dan said. He turned in that direction, but then stopped.

‘What?’ Harry asked.

‘What if he only ended up in the politics section?’ Dan said. ‘That lad said Keith seemed to be looking around for someone. What if he was trying to get away, rather than find them?’

Harry stared at Dan. ‘He was being followed, you mean?’

Dan nodded. ‘What if Keith came here to hide from someone, or at least shake them off?’

‘And he assumed they’d think he would go straight for politics, so he went a different way,’ Harry suggested.

‘Exactly.’ Dan looked around and then pointed. ‘These shelves here are the nearest, so I think he’d have gone this way.’ He began to walk towards the shelves to the left, Harry following.

He began to make his way through the corridors created by the shelves, turning left and right until he arrived at a space where there were more tables. Heads popped up to see what they were doing. Again, Harry and Dan stepped into the relative privacy of a row of bookcases.

‘He arrives here,’ Dan said in a low voice. ‘Then realises he’s not lost the person following him. What does he do next?’

‘He ended up over there,’ Harry pointed. ‘But which way did he go?’

Dan turned on the spot for a moment and said, ‘If it were me, I’d want to get a bit further away without boxing myself into a corner. I’d go this way.’ He followed a path through several more bookcases and stopped. ‘Then I spot my man there.’ He pointed again. ‘I realise that the game’s up, I might not escape and I need – for some reason – to hide my car keys. So, the keys must be down here somewhere.’ He gestured down the row of bookshelves they were standing in.

Harry began to walk along, glancing from side to side at the shelves. Then he stopped and stared.

‘Oh it couldn’t be—’ he began.

‘What?’ Dan followed.

Harry put out his hand and pulled a book from the shelf. ‘Tremlett and Stour. It’s his favourite text for teaching.’ He reached his hand into the space left by the book and grinned. He pulled out a set of Vauxhall car keys. ‘And we’ve got them,’ he said.
